Finances & Currency

CURRENCY
Since Belgium is a part of the Eurozone, the local currency is the Euro. The hotels and most businesses, restaurants and shops also allow electronic payments (with credit cards). It is recommended to have your ID with you or another document with a personal photo for identification. Banks and post offices are open during office hours from Monday to Friday (usually from 9 to 12 a.m. and from 2 to 4:30 p.m.). Handy cash dispensers are located in public spaces. You can also withdraw cash at a large number of supermarkets; when paying with your bank card, you can ask for a ‘cash-back', i.e. you can ask the cashier to add a specific amount to your purchase, which is then disbursed in cash. In comparison with our neighbouring countries, the prices for transport, the use of sports accommodations, hotels and restaurants are quite well in Belgium.

TIPS AND VAT
Prices quoted in a shop or restaurant are inclusive of VAT. Prices in a restaurant also include service charges (tips). It is not necessary to pay a little extra in restaurants, unless you want to express your appreciation of a good meal.

SHOPPING
Shopping is possible from Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Late-night shopping is possible on Friday evenings (until 9 p.m.).

TELEPHONE – CELL PHONE – INTERNET
Ghent and East Flanders have all the necessary modern communication facilities. The three major national cell phone operators ensure an excellent signal strength in the city. There are several internet access possibilities (access points) and several internet cafes. Almost every hotel provides its customers with (wireless) internet.

ELECTRICITY
The applicable voltage is 220V - 50Hz. Standard European wall sockets with 2 round pins are used.
