TRAVEL INSURANCE INFORMATION
The obligation to have a travel insurance was implemented on a European level for anyone with a short-term visa (type C) or a long-term visa equivalent to a Schengen visa (type D+C) (see the visa types).
Anyone who wants to enter the Schengen area (i.e. Belgium as well) with such a visa, must be able to prove that he or she has a valid personal or collective travel insurance to cover any expenses of repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical care and/or urgent treatment in a hospital.
The insurance must cover the entire territory of the Schengen countries and the entire duration of one’s stay.
The minimum cover is 30,000 euros. In principle, you must take out an insurance in your country of residence. If the inviting party takes out an insurance on your behalf, he or she must do so in his or her own place of residence.
Please contact the Belgian embassy or consulate (or the embassy representing Belgium) to verify which insurance policies are accepted.
